Former Mizoram legislator A B Chakma resigns from Mizo National Front

Aizawl : Prominent MNF leader Pu Alak Bikash Chakma, ex-MLA, has resigned from all positions/designations of the Mizo National Front Party including primary membership today.
A copy of the resignation has been made available with Mizonews.Net and Pu Chakma has not revealed the reason behind his move.
Pu A B Chakma was elected as Member of Legislative Assembly from Chawngte constituency on MNF ticket in 2006.
Meanwhile, another leader Pu Anil Kanti Chakma, ex MDC, Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC), also resigned from MNF.
Right now they have no intention to join any political party, the leaders stated in a press statement.

MZP begins construction of controversial “Zofate Chawlhbuk” at Borapansury

 Aizawl : The Mizo Zirlai Pawl, the largest students’ body in Mizoram, has started construction the controversial “Zofate Chawlhbuk” (Resting House of the Zo tribes) in Borapansury under the Chakma Autonomous District Council on Friday last.
Ground leveling was done first, after which building materials were taken to the place.
There was no report of any trouble and the construction work is believed to be going on smoothly. Earlier, there was a “misunderstanding” with the Chakma community which objected to the construction of “Zofate Chawlhbuk”.

As per plan, ‘Zofate Chawlhbuk’ will be a two-storey concrete building. It will be 45 feet long and 30 feet wide.
MZP said that the main objective behind the construction of Zofate Chawlhbuk in Borapansury village is to preserve the land that had been heroically preserved by the Mizo forefathers for the settlement of their future generations.

Indo-Bangla Joint Meet Begins Tomorrow

Agartala: The two-day India-Bangladesh Joint Border Conference of the collectors of six districts in Tripura and their Bangladeshi counterparts and the border guards of the districts concerned will begin from February 3.

“The delegation includes six district magistrates bordering western and northern part of Tripura and the meeting is important in terms of improving relations at the grassroots level and issues like smuggling, trans-border crime, narcotics and other important issues will be discussed,” District Magistrate of West Tripura district Abhishek Singh said.

Dy Commissioners of Bangladesh’s five districts – Comilla, Feni, Rangamati, Khagrachari and Chittagong here on January 9 and 10. Tripura has a 856 km-long border with the neighbouring country. would participate in the conference.

First Chakma Minister Nirupam Chakma Quits Congress in Mizoram

Aizawl/Borapansury : Mizoram's first Minister from the Chakma community and veteran Congress leader Nirupam Chakma today resigned from the primary membership of the party.

Chakma submitted his resignation as the senior adviser of the Chakma Autonomous District Council Congress Committee (CADCCC) and as primary member of the Congress party to the CADCCC President.

He sent the copies of his resignation letter to AICC President Sonia Gandhi and Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) President Lal Thanhawla.

Chakma first contested the state assembly polls in 1987 from Chawngte seat and was elected.

He again won from the same constituency in 1989 and was sworn in as a Minister of State on January 25, 1989 to become the first ever Chakma Minister in the state.

He was again inducted as minister of state after winning the state assembly polls in 1993.

He again won the state assembly polls in 1998 and 2003 during which the Congress sat in the opposition and was denied a cabinet berth after the Congress party returned to power in the 2008 state assembly polls when Nihar Kanti Chakma, a younger man was inducted as minister of state.

He was denied the Congress ticket in the 2013 state assembly and even was not given the post of Chief Executive Member of the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC).


CYMA delegation meets CM Thanhawla, urges for a Paper Mill

Aizawl: Pursuant to the proceedings of the last YMA General Conference 2014, the delegation of CYMA led by Mr Lalbiakzuala, President, CYMA met the Chief Minister Mr Lal Thanhawla at his office chamber today.

The YMA delegation apprised the C M of sentiments of the YMA delegates participating in the last Ratu YMA Gen Conference 2014 in having passed a resolution urging the Govt to set up of a Paper Mill in the State. The Chief Minister has been quoted as telling the CYMA leaders that the Govt too is of the same view as that of YMA leaders concerning establishment of a paper mill.

CYMA leaders urged the Govt. to involve YMA local units for identifying applicants for drug license for the particular local area, and to set up Car Parking-cum- Public Auditorium at suitable location in Aizawl City.

The CYMA leaders also discussed matters as to how best would the YMA be involved in the fire prevention awareness campaign side by side with the fire prevention activities of the Environment and Forests Dept.

2 teachers trained to teach "Ckakma" in schools: 61 schools identified for "Chakma" teachings

Agartala: On yet another new initiative of the Tripura govt., the "Chakma" learning to be introduced soon here in state. In 2012, the Government of Tripura announced it would "introduce Chakma language in Chakma script in primary schools of Tripura. Imparting of education up to elementary stage in mother tongue is a national policy. A total of 61 schools has been identified so far for "Chakma" subject learning in its own script, Minister Tapan Chakroborty replied to the question moved by the opposition MLA Ratan Lal Nath on Thursday at Assembly.

Replying to the question moved by the MLA Ratan Lal Nath during the assembly session recently, Minister Tapan Chakroborty stated that in regard of the recruitment of the teachers to teach "Chakma" in schools, the state govt. has made a necessary arrangements training at least 62 Chakma teachers. Chakroborty mentioned that from the year 2013 the "Chakma' learning has been started at Class I standard, and the state govt. has a plan to take the learning up to Class V standard.

However, it is mentionable here that during the year 2012 the Government of Tripura in its cabinet meeting chaired by Cheif Minister Manik Sarkar recently, has made a historic decision to introduce Chakma language in Chakma script in primary schools of Tripura. The movement for learning Chakma language in its own script has been going on for over two decades in Tripura. In fact during the tenure of MNF Government in Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) from 2003-2008 Rasik Mohan Chakma, the then Chief Executive Member, CADC had taken up the matter with the Government of Tripura through some official correspondences and extended necessary help to the Chakmas of Tripura by imparting training to some educated youth.

Mizo CS and, DGP attend national level meet

Aizawl: Chief Secretary H.V. Lalringa and Director General of Police M. Tumsanga attended the national level conference of chief secretaries and DGPs inaugurated by Deputy PM L.K. Advani today at the Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi.

National Security was the main subject of today's meeting. Internal Security and threats from terrorists were discussed. Advani thanked the states for their Co-operation in defending our security.

P.M. Vajpayee is also to attend the meeting at its conclusion tomorrow, government sources said.
