Mizoram remains shortage of policemen due to non-filling of vacancies, says outgoing DIG

Aizawl (Mizo News)/Borapansury: Outgoing DIG (Southern Range) L.H. Shanliana, IPS today met members of various NGOs in Lunglei- MUP, YMA, MHIP, MZP, MSU, Chhimbial Chhantu and mediapersons from MJA Lunglei at SP Office Conference Hall.

He briefed them on the initiatives taken by the Police in maintaining Law and Order and also on several important things that the general public should know.

From next month, L.H. Shanliana will join his new office of DIG in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh. The outgoing DIG (SR) apprised the NGOs and MJA about the various steps being taken by the government within Southern Range. It includes estimation of Rs. 73 Lakhs each for Tuipang, Sangau and Borapansury for construction of Thana. He also mentioned that construction work has begun. Sanction has also been made for Thana construction in Lunglei, Tlabung, Vasei and Bungtlang(S), DIG (SR) added.

He also mentioned that Rs. 500 lakhs sanction has been made for construction of Police Quarter within Lunglei town and also Rs. 28.42 crore for construction of 3rd IR Bn. Hqrs at Thingkah, near Lawngtlai.

In total, Rs. 40.03 crore worth infrastructure development for Police Department is being on for Southern Range that includes Lunglei, Lawngtlai and Saiha Districts, DIG mentioned. The outgoing DIG said remarked that the Law and Order situation in the 3 Districts – Lunglei, Lawngtlai and Saiha is quite satisfactory. He also expressed thankfulness over the last MLA and MP elections which he said were successful and peaceful owing to the collective effort of the general public, NGOs and the government.

Briefing on the present strength of Police under Southern Range, DIG mentioned that in Lunglei District where there should be 388 Police personnel, there are 322, therefore, 66 posts lie vacant; in Lawngtlai District -there are 187 against total 227 posts, therefore, 40 posts lie vacant; in Saiha District- there are 214 posts against total 265 posts, therefore, 51 posts lie vacant.

The DIG said that due to non-filling of the vacant posts, there is shortage of police personnel in every Police Station.
Talking about demonstrations by the people in demand of something or in agitation, DIG (SR) said that in Democracy different kinds of demonstration is done to pressurize the government, but the people need to take caution in that they should not cause destruction to government buildings, vehicles and properties and should not in any way block National Highway which is the lifeline of the common people.

During his service as DIG (SR) for 1 year and 8 months (19.12.2012 – 31.8.2014), L.H. Shanliana visited all the police stations along Bangladesh border. He also visited twice SP Offices and Thana in Saiha and Lawngtlai.
L.H. Shanliana thanked the Police in the 3 districts under Southern Range and 2nd MAP for their support and cooperation during his whole term of DIG (SR) Lunglei. NGOs and MJA also thanked the outgoing DIG (SR) for the cooperation he had extended during his entire term and wished him all success in his further service.
