Kohima: The Naga Hoho (NH) and the Muslim Council Dimapur (MCD) have declared that the March 5 incident where one Syed Sarif Khan was lynched by a mob was a ‘social issue’ and not related with any religious or communal issue.
In a joint statement NH president P Chuba Ozukum and Assembly secretary K Elu Ndang along with MCD president A H Tapadar and working president Rahman issued a joint appeal to the people, that wherever they live, they should not react to rumours but remain calm and maintain peaceful co-existence towards restoring normalcy.
The signatories also appealed to social media to help in maintaining peace and tranquility. The emergency meeting was held following the March 5 Dimapur incident.
Meanwhile, the Naga Hoho has expressed condemnation over the rape case on February 24 in Dimapur, seriously viewed the ‘mob justice incident’ and condemned person(s) responsible for the death of the accused on March 5 and vandalism in New Market on March 4.
The NH through its Communication Cell issued the statement after its executive meeting in Kohima on March 6 deliberated on the sequence of incidents in Dimapur after the February 24 rape case.
Further, the Hoho also urged Nagas to let the law of land prevail in all cases which were registered with police.
It also said the failure on the state government agencies in handling the law and order situation, particularly in Dimapur, was a great concern for Nagas in and outside Nagaland. The Hoho urged the state government to thoroughly probe the incident. They also conveyed deep condolences to the family of late Inito Swu who died after the firing incident at Clock Tower Junction on March 5 and wished speedy recovery of those injured. (UNI)
